Lower Corrib

The lower Corrib is located right outside the front door of the Kayak club. The river flows through the city centre under a number of bridges, ensuring spectators are always plentiful.

A Trip down the River Corrib.

1.The Shit Chute
This is where every trip down the lower begins. The Shit Chute flows almost beside the clubhouse and joins the Corrib just below the Fish Gates. It didn't get its name for nothing. DO NOT CAPSIZE HERE, IT IS NASTY.

2. The Fish Gates
The Fish Gates get their name from, well the fish gates actually, that stretch across the whole river. On high levels (around 16 gates) they are almost completely submerged. At lower levels there are eddylines to squirt or play on. It's a good place to practise ferrygliding because the eddies are huge. Yours truly at Obriens

3. Hygeia
The first eddy on river right to break into on the way downriver. It can be tough for people on the first few sessions because the flow is fast there in high water and the eddy line is wide and messy. The easiest way to recognise Hygeia is by the red railings above the little drop. On high water aim at these.

4. O'Briens Bridge
One of the most famous spots on the river. There is a largeish, messyish eddy on the river right. From here you can attempt to surf the legendary OBriens wave. Long boats are prefered here since the the wave is a little upstream of the eddy and is quite fast. The Obriens wave and wavetrain behind work best on a thumping 16 gates the wave is a little upstream of the eddy and is quite fast.
On lower levels the eddy lines are still good for squirting or eddyline moves. The middle eddy behind the bridge pillar is also more accessible at lower water and is a good place to practise ferrygliding.

5. Wolfe Tone Bridge
There isn't much of an eddy behind the pillars of this bridge but I have seen people drop into the wave under the middle arch. If just shooting the river, go through the right or middle arches. If aiming for the right one, paddle way over to the right since the current has a tendency to push you towards the pillar.

6. The Claddagh
This is the place where most swimmers wind up. It is nasty and dirty. Try not to swim.

7. Spanish
Alternative break out to the Claddagh. The eddyline is okay for squirting. Kinda dirty

8. Rapids
What can I say. The best bit of the river. The Rapids will only work when there's a low spring tide and plenty of water coming down the river. The top hole is pretty shallow and grippy. Most people hang out at the bottom hole/wave.
